Number 5: The Big Short(2015)

This is a recent Oscar-nominated movie which has perfectly portrayed the reason for 2008 Stock Market crash. As a movie it has its own style. Something of a documentary, a comedy sometimes, but essentially a drama since the crisis cost 8 million people their job and their homes. It is the story of four extraordinary human beings in the world of finance, who predicted the 2008 market crash. These guys shorted the market while the entire world was long.  They made huge amounts of money for their investors, all while the markets were tearing themselves apart. They felt horrible that the financial world had to collapse for them to be proven right, but they also acknowledged that the information was there for anyone to see. Watch it yourself to experience the fancy financial world. Few technical jargons would be difficult to comprehend if you are from non-financial background.

Number 4: Wall Street(1987)

Wall street is a story of a young and impatient stockbroker who is willing to do anything to get to the top, including trading on illegal inside information taken through a ruthless and greedy corporate raider.His name is Gordon Gekko, the name no doubt inspired by the lizard that feeds on insects and sheds its tail when trapped. With his diabolical charm, slicked-back hair, city-college chip on his shoulder, and era-defining “greed-is-good” mantra, Gordon Gekko may by one of the all-time great film roles. Michael Douglas’s performance as Gekko won a deserved Oscar in 1988 and makes “Wall Street” required viewing. The movie has a traditional plot structure: The hungry kid is impressed by the successful older man, seduced by him, betrayed by him, and then tries to turn the tables. The actual details of the plot are not so important as the changes we see in the characters.

Number 3: The Wolf of Wall Street(2013)

This is perhaps one of the most popular movies on Stock Market. Even a person from non-financial background can relate very easily to this movie. It’s based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.  It recounts Belfort’s perspective on his career as a stockbroker in New York City and how his firm Stratton Oakmont engaged in rampant corruption and fraud on Wall Street that ultimately led to his downfall. Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese does a wonderful job keeping this movie at a high at all times. Never once does this movie lose its energy or sense of humor much like the drug induced characters.

Number 2: Margin Call(2011)

Margin Call is an outstanding  thriller that revolves around the key people at an investment bank over a 24-hour period during the early stages of the financial crisis. When an entry-level analyst unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster. The performances are top notch. Everyone from Zachary Quinto to Demi Moore brings their A-game. Even supporting characters are oddly fleshed out for a film with such an ensemble cast. You don’t need to understand a lot about the markets to follow the film. One of the key characters, John, is a cool, polished Brit who likes to say things like, “Speak to me in plain terms,” because his job requires him to manage the corporation but not necessarily understand its business. Indeed, as we now know, a fresh young college graduate could have looked at the balance sheets and clearly seen Wall Street was doomed. This is indeed a must watch for all Stock market enthusiasts.

Number 1: Million Dollar Traders(2009)

Whether you are an amateur or professional trader, or even if you are aspiring to be a trader, this documentary series will leave you awestruck. This is a 3 episode series which depicts an experiment on eight ordinary people who are given a million dollars, a fortnight of intensive training and two months to run their own hedge fund. Can they make a killing? As the novices learn the dark art of trading stocks and shares, the financial markets start to buckle. Making money takes second place to basic survival as the brutal realities of global economics take their toll on the traders. This documentary matches the real experience of working in an actual trading environment. Demonstrates why trading is not for everyone. The traders develop in different ways, some crash unexpectedly and others are just great. The interactions of the traders and their reactions to the stress of having to perform makes this a compelling series. This is not about any investment fraud or financial crisis, rather it is about the real life experience of traders which would relate very closely to the people working in this field. No wonder, it’s a must watch and spots 1st position in our list.
